Danish Building and Property Agency is a part of the Ministry of Transport, Building, and Housing, and it is responsible for the construction, facility management, and rent of government properties. Their work heavily depends on communication, as there are delicate details to discuss and schedules to confirm in every project. With quarantine restrictions limiting in-person meetings, a significant part of this work moved into digital space, where it can be easy to lose track of important information. For this reason, the agency required a reliable tool for recording meetings. And like other governmental institutions of Denmark, it was ahead of the game when it came to adopting the right solutions for remote working tasks.
St James Church, Piccadilly has history coursing through its brickwork. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, 18th century Prime Minister William Pitt the Elder was baptised at its font. German Bombs severely damaged the church during the blitz and it stood empty for 7 years after the war before being repaired. Now St James Church is not just used for services, it hosts lunchtime and evening recitals which they wanted to share with larger audiences by filming and streaming. Director of Photography, Renan Ozturk, travels the globe filming in the most remote locations from Mount Everest, to the deserts of Utah. Often the conditions he shoots in stresses his equipment to the point of failure while filming. The Teradek Prism encoder is part of the solution.
With the coronavirus pandemic severely shutting down international athletic competitions for months, Swedish photographer Joel Marklund was pleased to get back to sports again. In July he was back photographing rock climbing, athletics and football. He brought the latest professional Nikon D series model and took advantage of the superb AF system to chase for the perfect moment, paired with ultra-fast Wise CFexpress cards. Joel recalled one of the football matches during the shutdown, he faced not only challenging weather conditions, but also finding a creative camera angles for his shot.
Like any encoding and decoding platform, Teradek Prism was originally designed for broadcasters and webcasters. Because the system is a 10-bit HDR video device, it is generating interest from post houses as a remote collaboration, and real-time monitoring platform. With producers, directors, investors, editors and colourists working independently and remotely, Prism meets a very real need in the market by offering a solution developed with input from Technicolor and Netflix. Currently, there are many ways to share, monitor and collaborate video from remote locations. These include the use of lower resolution proxies (unsuitable for judging colours and image nuance), video conferencing technology (often heavily compressed distorting the image) or dedicated fibre links (superb but expensive and limited to specific locations).

The rest of us are either uncomfortable in front of the lens or confident for no good reason! It’s this category that needs a teleprompter. Prompting probably conjures up images of TV studios with heavy, expensive rigs attached to broadcast cameras. But there is an alternative that’s an integral part of thousands of streaming kits: the tablet teleprompter.

Live streaming is now the number one priority. News and even government agencies, houses of worship and health agencies, training and education institutes are all re-doubling their efforts to communicate live with private and public audiences.
Maintaining a healthy 2m distance between interviewer and guest, between camera crew and interviewees poses a problem for video shooters. There are three options to keep you safe: A longer XLR cable (potential trip hazard) A boom pole (requires a dedicated sound engineer) A wireless microphone system (can suffer interference)
Live from Sussex and Stockport (via. London) Live Production has always had its own set of challenges, including managing a network of cameras and equipment for a show where there’s no option of a second take. Keeping up with the technology is hard enough, but what if all of this has to be done with presenters that are geographically separated, with an MCR operator that can’t get to the control room. Comprehensive hardware options have existed for years. Portable production units (PPU) combine decoders, switchers, and encoders from manufacturers such as Blackmagic Design, Datavideo, Teradek, and many more into a transport ready solution. Software production is a real solution. It’s designed to give you most of the capabilities of a broadcast unit, in a package that’s installable on a laptop, or as a compact turnkey solution.
Panasonic sold hundreds of AW-HE2 camera units. When it was discontinued, the calls kept coming in from customers who needed something of this size and functionality for small radio studios and news studios. At last we have a worthy replacement in the AW-UE4. It is a little bigger than the HE2, but it has tons more features, many of these are particularly useful at the moment. Great in a tight space The UE4 has a very wide-angle lens with a 111-degree field of view. This means sitting on the desk in my small office the camera can see the whole room. There is a 4X digital zoom which you can use to crop in for closer head shots (or to hide the pile of toilet rolls and corned beef in the opposite corner). If you are really hard-up for space because it’s only 500 grams it can be hung upside-down on a ceiling or under a shelf using the supplied bracket.
On Tuesday I had the pleasure of setting up two PTZ cameras with a new all-in-one switching, recording and streaming system from Lumens. I say pleasure because the only time I had to read the manual was for a default login. Really, just once. That’s the beauty of Lumens. We sell a lot of encoding, recording and streaming equipment, but I’m not sure anything is as straight-forward as the LC200 multi-channel recorder and streaming device. That’s great news for schools, universities, charities, business, conference and theatres – or any organisation that doesn’t have a dedicated technical crew available for every event.
With the current situation there has never been so much requirement for video conferencing using Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams or even Facetime. In the last couple of days, I’ve been asked by a couple of cameraman I know how they can use their fantastic kit for this purpose, as they are stuck at home for the next couple of months with thousands of pounds worth of cameras gathering dust. All these communication platforms running on PC or Mac can take an input from any webcam, but as good as modern webcams are, with their tiny sensors and limited microphones they can never compete with even the most basic professional camera systems.
There’s a way of communicating with video that’s inexpensive but delivers vastly improved quality. With few exceptions, webcams built into laptops, phones and tablets are poor. For a quick one-to-one conversation, they serve a purpose, but for critical meetings and presentations, they are quite unsuitable. Cheap clip-on webcams may be the next logical choice, but these usually cope badly with dark rooms or subjects lit with bright sunlight. They also react very poorly to changing lighting conditions or movement. Enter the pro Webcam with ePTZ.

RED Digital Cinema’s DSMC2 architecture has been one of the company’s most enduring camera systems. The design offers superb modularity, with the entire camera system built around a ‘Brain’, RED’s terminology for the camera module, housing the sensor, ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) for image processing, Mini-Mag slots for media, and I/O connectors for accessories. This approach offers a real advantage when building your shooting kit, as the same Brain can be configured for lightweight handheld or tracking applications, or fully rigged as a studio camera.
Sony’s new FX9 is an impressive piece of engineering. Combining the latest design of full frame, high resolution sensors with a traditional camcorder form factor, the FX9 can capture beautiful shallow DOF footage with an impressive 15 stops of dynamic range. If there has been one outstanding criticism it has been related to powering the camera with proprietary batteries and an unusual PSU voltage of 19.5Volts. There are competing solutions to adapt the FX-9 to use professional V-Lock batteries and Paul Ream from Extrashot thinks he has found the best on the market; it’s from Holdan’s manufacturer - CoreSWX.

Those with some grey hair like me might think eSports refers to a person from Yorkshire’s exercise regime, but I asked my 10-year-old and he says eSports is the fastest growing sector in the AV industry. At ISE this year Panasonic combines its latest broadcast and live entertainment products to create an eSports arena that attendees can actually participate in. Watching other people play computer games is my idea of purgatory, but it appears I’m in a minority, and millions of 10 to 20-year olds with disposable income would rather watch eSports than Sky Sports.

BLACKMAGIC DESIGN HALL 3, STAND C140 The Video Assist 12G 5” and 7” monitor recorders are now shipping. The original HD versions were incredibly popular with AV technicians who wanted to verify SDI and HDMI feeds and check waveform levels. For production teams, their 4K HDR capture makes them a superb on-camera SD card recorder. The ATEM Mini is a very small, cost-effective 4 channel HDMI video switcher with streaming output. Great as a portable mixer or a signal switcher, it’s being adopted by everyone from conference producers to AV technicians looking for simple HDMI switching.
At a recent conference, one of the delegates drew my attention to a new BBC Academy training video on using smartphones for journalism. I was particularly interested because I’d just bought myself a smartphone with a decent stills camera. My wife is really pleased about this because now when we go on holiday, or walk up the rugged Wolstonbury Hill near my home, I can carry my share of water, dog treats, snacks etc. because I’m not carrying five lenses and my DSLR in a backpack the size of a parachute.
There is no doubt that the Sony FX9 is a tremendously significant camcorder and as a new decade begins Holdan’s manufacturers are beginning to ship some fantastic new accessories to increase its already impressive capabilities. Power up There will be a few V-lock adaptors for the FX9 in the coming weeks, but Core SWX are confident their CXV-FX9 is the best option. It has a low battery warning LED, and XLR input to allow for hot-swapping between external and onboard power and being made of aluminium it’s more robust than plastic alternatives. As for the weight, 544g still isn’t heavy and most users prefer it to provide a better-balanced rig.
The FX9 ships as standard with a 35Wh Sony BP battery. For many users, their first thought will be how to use high capacity broadcast batteries for all day shoots. Sony offers an all-singing extension unit, the XDCA-FX9. As well as offering a battery mounting plate, it’s a true expansion system, delivering functionality such as 16-bit RAW output, wireless audio support and network capabilities. For many, this expensive add-on will be hard to justify.
A humble Canon LP-E6 DSLR battery has a 13 watt hour (Wh) capacity, tiny compared with a V-mount unit at 98, 150 or even 198 Wh capacity. These broadcast batteries can keep you going all day, but are far too big and cumbersome for DSLR or mirrorless cameras. A smaller battery means run time worries, down time and technical problems for a DSLR owner: how many batteries do you charge before a shoot? How much time does that take? How often do you swap DSLR batteries on a shoot? How long does that take? How many small DSLR batteries do you lose throughout the year? How much does that cost you?
Datavideo’s HDR-1 is a compact half rack unit designed for use in live event productions. It’s an incredibly easy all-rounder, suitable for all HD users, multiple workflows and countless applications. Monitoring the work The first step with HDR-1 is plugging your HDMI source and looping that video connection out to any HD dispaly or TV. Why is that special? Many recorders are ‘end of chain’ devices, so you can’t watch what’s being recorded. HDR-1 is different.
How many times have you heard the phrase – the camcorder is dead? Now video cameras are going full frame, how can there possibly be a place in the market for a fixed lens camcorder with a smaller sensor? Well, there is a place for them, and great reasons why quite often they will get you the best pictures in the widest variety of circumstances. When filming a live event or in a variety of locations the zoom lenses available with smaller sensor camcorders offer a range simply not available from a single lens on any other type of camera.

With high-end production cameras, like the Alexa LF, Venice, RED Ranger and (technically) the new Alexa Mini LF starting to favour 24v over 12v power, one of the biggest issues is, well…power. Do you go with 12v to 24v up-conversion, or invest in a set of 24v batteries? Let’s look at the pros and cons of each:

For broadcasters and film-makers, completely eliminating downtime is the dream. Pro camera operators need their kit powered and working at all times, whether it's in a live environment or on a busy set, up against a tight shooting schedule. Turning off a camera to replace a battery in such a situation is going to be a major inconvenience, especially if your battery is powering the camera, wireless transmitters, follow focus, on camera monitors and an EVF. The team at Core SWX have taken note of this problem, brought it to the lab, and have found quite the revolutionary workaround with the Jetpack EVO. The Jetpack sits between the camera and battery to provide a standby 29wh power source. Firstly, the 15A maximum draw enables a power hungry camera system to continue running for around 5 minutes. An Alexa Mini with the MVF-1 will run for around 20 minutes. This means that you can run your batteries closer to the 0% marker. So you can get more out of every pack, without the paranoid fear of running out of power at a critical moment.
Today software, apps and computer games cannot be released with clunky user interfaces or huge menu structures. And who has time to read an inch-thick software manual these days? Instead new software is tested on first-time users to check its “usability” or user-friendliness. A new version of Wirecast has just been released by Telestream with new features and significant improvements. In the powerful Wirecast Pro version the Web stream plugin has been completely rewritten to improve stability and performance, this is fantastic for remote video contributions although you are still better off using the Teradek Wirecast Plugin if using their Cube encoder/decoders, because they offer lower latency. The new plugin also lets you utilise IP-enabled Panasonic and Lumens PTZ camera streams, if they don’t have NDI.

We have moved on since the 80s and 90s and left terms such as Betamax and S-Video languishing in museums (http://www.obsoletemedia.org/). Underscan and Overscan still crop up, however, in monitor specs. These terms have their roots in old analogue television, when using CRTs or Cathode Ray Tube monitors and TV sets. Due to the way the electron gun worked inside the old TV tube part of the outside edge of the image was intentionally cropped as it was not the same image quality.
