The CXA-FX9 mounts directly to the back of the Sony PXW-FX9, as an alternative power option to the Sony XDCA-FX9. The milled aluminum product inserts into the battery slot of the camera and also attaches into the top of the camera(with included screw hardware) to provide a secure platform for mounting gold mount batteries directly onto the FX9 camera. It has a 19.5v DC output with a visual low battery warning LED and a 4-pin XLR DC input for hotswapping between external and on-board power. In addition, it’s equipped with two powertaps, two 4-pin hirose, a 5v USB, one 1/4-20 thread on the top to attach an accessory, and a USB micro firmware update port on the rear to ensure future compatibility with camera firmware updates.
A BP-U30 or BP-U35 battery pack fits inside of the battery cavity on the camera, allowing the user to hotswap batteries. Once the 3-stud on-board pack dies, it will automatically pull power from the BP-U30 and you will see the battery indication on the viewfinder change. To make it easier to take the CXA-FX9 plate on-and-off, M4-8mm thumbscrews can be purchased separately.
Sony’s new FX9 is an impressive piece of engineering. Combining the latest design of full frame, high resolution sensors with a traditional camcorder form factor, the FX9 can capture beautiful shallow DOF footage with an impressive 15 stops of dynamic range. If there has been one outstanding criticism it has been related to powering the camera with proprietary batteries and an unusual PSU voltage of 19.5Volts. There are competing solutions to adapt the FX-9 to use professional V-Lock batteries and Paul Ream from Extrashot thinks he has found the best on the market; it’s from Holdan’s manufacturer - CoreSWX.
The FX9 ships as standard with a 35Wh Sony BP battery. For many users, their first thought will be how to use high capacity broadcast batteries for all day shoots. Sony offers an all-singing extension unit, the XDCA-FX9. As well as offering a battery mounting plate, it’s a true expansion system, delivering functionality such as 16-bit RAW output, wireless audio support and network capabilities. For many, this expensive add-on will be hard to justify.
Core SWX, a leader in battery and charging solutions, announces Holdan as its new European distributor. Based in the UK, Holdan will offer Core’s full line of battery and charging solutions, including its latest Powerbase Edge and Nano-M Series.
