Low Cost Alternative to SxS Memory Cards
Do you love your new Sony
camcorder, but not the prices for SxS memory cards? We've got an
alternative—Sonnet's SDHC Adapter for SxS Camera Slot. This Sonnet
adapter is designed expressly for use in Sony XDCAM camcorders which
record to SxS memory media, and enables you to use lower cost SDHC
memory cards in their place(1). When used with Class 10 or
faster SDHC cards, the Sonnet SDHC Adapter for SxS Camera Slot
duplicates SxS Pro memory cards' functionality, including support for
overcrank and undercrank modes.
Sonnet’s SDHC Adapter for SxS
Camera Slot is the same size as an SxS memory card, and, unlike standard
memory card adapters, allows the SDHC card to fit flush inside its
shell. This critical feature makes the Sonnet adapter interchangeable
with SxS cards, and ensures your camcorder's memory card slot door
closes completely with the adapter inserted. Using the SDHC Adapter for
SxS Camera Slot is easy. Just insert your SDHC card into the Sonnet
adapter, and then insert the Sonnet adapter into your camcorder and
format the card—you're ready to record.
After recording is complete,
remove the SDHC Adapter for SxS Camera Slot from the camcorder and swap
out SDHC cards using the integrated push-to-eject mechanism. Because
SxS cards share the same form factor and interface as ExpressCard/34
adapters, you can insert the Sonnet adapter directly into your notebook
computer’s ExpressCard slot to offload the files from the SDHC card.
If your computer lacks an ExpressCard slot, you
can remove the SDHC card from the Sonnet adapter and use it with any
SDHC-compatible card reader.
For the price of one SxS memory
card, you can purchase Sonnet's adapter and several equivalent-capacity
SDHC cards to increase your recording capacity and lower your recording
costs. You'll get hours of extra shooting time without the need to stop,
offload the footage and reformat the card to use it again!

SDHC Card Adapter for SxS
The Sonnet SDHC Adapter uses a push-in/push-out mechanism where the whole SD card is enclosed in the Adapter, allowing the user to close the door covering the slots on the camera.
First insert the SD card in the Sonnet Adapter, then insert the adapter into the camera SxS slot and close the door. If this is the first time that the memory card has been used, then the memory card should be formatted in Slot B using the following method: Menu>Others>Format Media, and select slot B. This should be done even if the camera does not ask to format the card.
The Sonnet SDHC Adapter works the same way you would expect a Sony SxS Pro memory card to work. All functions including 60fps overcranking are available as long as you use a Class 10 SDHC card.
Follow the same recommendations that Sony has given for their SxS cards:
* Do not remove the SDHC Adapter while the red light is lit over that slot, as it is still writing to the card. This may take up to 6-7 seconds after recording is stopped.
* Do not go from REC to PLAY without letting the camera complete writing to the card.
* Do not remove the battery, or power down the camera while red light above the slot is lit and the camera is still writing.
Plus:
* Do not eject the SD card from the SDHC Adapter while the adapter is inserted in the camera. Remove the adapter from the camera before exchanging the SD card.
There are three ways to get your footage from the SD card onto your system:
- Insert the Sonnet SDHC Adapter into an Expresscard/34 slot on your computer laptop.
- Remove the SD card and insert into a SD slot on your computer.
- Remove the SD card and insert into a USB SD card reader.
We recommend using the Sony Clip Browser program to copy the footage from the cards and to your hard drive. Using either Explorer or Finder does not guarantee that all of the files required to edit will be copied in their entirety. Clip Browser also gives you the option of CRC data checking. Each editing program has it's own method of ingesting the footage. Some are able to read the Native files that the camera produces, in which case you are ready to edit. Others require a conversion to an intermediary format to allow for speedy editing. Clip Browser has options to allow you to convert footage to most formats.
Shotput Pro from Imagine Products is another option for copying data to the hard drive.
