Thunderbolt technology is amazing—the speed (up to 10Gb/s) and versatility (supporting high-resolution displays plus high-performance data devices through a single, compact port) make it clear that this is the next generation I/O technology, available today. But what about connecting existing FireWire, eSATA, and USB 3.0 peripherals as well as high speed memory cards? Sonnet’s Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter expands Thunderbolt connectivity to support more than just storage systems and monitors. This Sonnet adapter adds an ExpressCard/34 2.0 slot to any computer to which it’s connected, enabling you to use a wide variety of ExpressCard/34 cards to add a wide range of interfaces and capabilities to your system.
Imagine adding more FireWire® ports, a Gigabit Ethernet connection or an eSATA interface through a single Thunderbolt adapter! This card adapter allows you to choose your connections and add more to your setup. Because this adapter supports hot-swapping, you can select and change the ExpressCard to use as needed—it supports most Sonnet ExpressCard/34 cards (with a PCI Express interface), such as our FireWire, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB 3.0 interfaces, CompactFlash and SDXC card readers, and select eSATA controllers. It also supports specialty adapters like the latest revision PCIe Bus Extender for Sonnet’s Qio™ Professional Media Readers, and the interface adapter for the AJA® io Express.
Set up for this Sonnet adapter is simple—just connect it directly to your computer or at the end of a Thunderbolt device chain with a Thunderbolt cable (not included, sold at the Apple Store)—that’s it. There’s no software to install and no power supply to plug in. Plug the ExpressCard/34 card into the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter as you would into a notebook computer's ExpressCard slot, install software for the adapter if necessary, and you are ready to work. Sonnet’s Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter gives you the additional connectivity you need, today.
Versatile Connectivity via Thunderbolt
Sonnet's Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter opens a world of connectivity options to any Thunderbolt technology-enabled computer.
ExpressCard/34 adapters, originally intended for use with notebook computers, offer users additional connectivity and functionality beyond what’s available through their computers’ stock configuration. With Sonnet's EchoExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter, you can have a Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt adapter, an eSATA Thunderbolt adapter, a FireWire 800 Thunderbolt adapter, a USB 3.0 Thunderbolt adapter, or an SDXC or CF Thunderbolt adapter. Your options are limitless.

A computer's ExpressCard/34 slot supports two bus standards, PCIe and USB 2.0. ExpressCard adapters fall into two basic categories: those that use the ExpressCard's PCIe interface, and those that use its USB 2.0 interface. Upon inserting the ExpressCard card, the computer automatically senses which interface the adapter is using. Examples of PCIe-based adapters include the cards listed in the Compatible ExpressCard/34 Adapters FAQ. Examples of USB 2.0-based adapters include USB 2.0 cards and many multi-format memory card readers such as Sonnet's 21-in-1 Multimedia Memory Card Reader & Writer.
Thunderbolt technology natively supports the PCIe bus standard, but not USB 2.0, so the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter only interfaces with PCIe-based ExpressCard/34 adapters. As a result, all USB 2.0-based ExpressCard/34 cards are unsupported.
Not at this time. Sonnet has received many inquiries about this product's compatibility with SxS memory cards, because they are designed to interface with an ExpressCard/34 slot. Based on testing in our lab (Sonnet), we expect that the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter will be fully compatible with SxS memory cards and transfer data at the full card speed once Sony makes available an updated driver that is Thunderbolt technology-aware.
The Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt adapter requires Mac OS 10.6.8 or later and supports cards with Thunderbolt technology-aware drivers. Download and install the latest driver to make your card compatible:

No. The Apple Thunderbolt Monitor does not provide power to a Thunderbolt device connected to the captive cable, and consequently does not support bus-powered devices (like the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter) connected to the captive cable. Apple instructs in their manual to connect the Apple Thunderbolt Monitor's captive cable to a Thunderbolt computer, and to connect Thunderbolt peripherals the the Thuderbolt port using a detachable Thuderbolt cable.
